Plan a Career Change With Clarity
- Plan a career change in four stages: reflect, explore, test and decide.
- Start with what energizes you and what you want less of, not with job titles.
- Small experiments — conversations, courses, side projects — reduce risk.
- Keep all notes in one career section so you can see patterns over time.
- A planner gives the process calm structure, whatever your age or field.
You can plan a career change with clarity by moving through four stages in your planner — reflect, explore, test and decide — instead of trying to solve everything at once. A big change feels less daunting when each step is small and written down.
This is not about quitting tomorrow. It is about giving an important question the thoughtful space it deserves.

Stage 1: Reflect
Start a career section with a few honest pages:
- What gives me energy at work — and what drains it?
- What strengths do people come to me for?
- What do I want my ordinary Tuesday to feel like?
- What matters most now: flexibility, income, meaning, growth?
These answers become your criteria. For more prompts, see Journaling Prompts for Your Planner.
Stage 2: Explore
List three to five possible directions. For each, note what attracts you, what worries you and what you would need to learn. Keep an eye on patterns rather than job titles.

Stage 3: Test with small steps
Choose low-risk experiments: a conversation with someone in the field, a short course, a weekend project or volunteering. After each one, write a few lines — what felt right, what did not. A learning log works well here.
Stage 4: Decide and plan
When patterns become clear, write a decision page: the direction, why it fits your criteria and the first three steps. Break the path into milestones, as in Dreams in Progress: Goals You Can Keep, and set a quarterly review date.

Be kind to the process
Career changes rarely move in straight lines. Some weeks you will explore a lot; others, nothing. That is fine. Your planner keeps the thread so you can pick it up again. If you are in the middle of a messy stretch, Fresh Start After a Chaotic Month may help. And for a companion that makes goals feel important, meet The Croco or The Belt.
